Au Pair Scam Alert - Stay Vigilant
Unfortunately, fraudulent activity can occur in any sector, including the au pair and nanny industry. While Totalnannies is not a matching platform, all our host families are personally screened and verified to ensure authenticity. However, if you choose to use an au pair matching site, it's essential to be aware of potential scams and know how to recognize and report suspicious behavior.
Never Send Money to Host Families or Au Pairs
You should never send cash, cheques, MoneyGram or Western Union payments to a host family or au pair. Money should never exchange hands before a personal meeeting. If anyone requests payment upfront, this is a serious red flag and likely a scam.
Common Au Pair Scams
1. Fake Cheque Scam
Scammers may pose as host families and send au pairs fraudulent cheques to cover travel expenses. Soon after, they cancel the arrangement and request that the au pair returns the funds via wire transfer (e.g., Western Union). This scam is particularly prevalent in countries such as Cameroon and Nigeria.
2. Bogus Travel Agents
Another tactic involves referring applicants to a fake "family travel agent" who asks for a deposit or upfront fee to arrange travel. The agency may seem professional and ask for detailed information, but once payment is made, both the agent and the "family" disappear.
3. Visa Processing Fee Scam
Some scammers ask for payment to cover visa or work permit processing fees. No legiitimate family or agency should require this.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
- Offers that seem too good to be true, with unusually high pay or extravagant benefits.
- Communications focused heavily on money or asking overly personal questions early on.
- Host families who refuse or delay providing references, photos or supporting documentation.
- Poorly written messages from individuals claiming to be English but displaying very poor English skills.
- Rapid offers made without through communication or interviews.
- Inccomplete or inconsistent information, or pressure to make quick decisions.
What to Do if You're Unsure
If you feel uncertain about a situation, we're here to help. Forward suspcious emails to info@totalnannies.com and we'll investigate. We typically respond within one business day. Always verify references independently - if a teacher reference is provided, call the school using a verified phone number fron an official website or directory.
Special Caution: Nigeria and Similar Scams
We've received reports of scams inviting au pairs to travel to Nigeria or other countries, claiming your profile matches their family needs. These scams involve sending "official" documents and requesting a visa fee via Western Union. Do not send any money or personal documents such as passports. These documents often lack any verifiable contact details and should be treated with extreme suspicion.
Do Not Proceed If:
- You are asked to send money.
- You are introduced to a third party (e.g., travel agent) who asks for payment.
- You are promised help with visas or permits only through a family's "contact" who later requests money.
- The family cannot provide verifiable references.
- The offer moves forward unusually quickly.
- The offer includes high pocket money, luxury benefits, or conditions that seem too good to be true.
- The information provided is inconsistent or incomplete.
- You feel unsure, rushed, or uncomfortable at any point.

- Never send money to secure an au pair or nanny position.
- Never travel to meet a host family without verified references and secure arrangements.
- Make your own travel plans through reputable agents or airlines.
- Avoid responding to unsolicited job offers or promotions that ask for payment upfront.

It is always good to make references before choosing aupairs.
I had send a Russian girl packing before I got Cobi.
Cobi has been our aupair for 24months now and her contract with us has ended and she do not want to increase her term of contract. she has been in charge with four of my kids of age 2,4,6 and 8 During her time with us,she did perform the following duties;
-Look after our five months old baby and at times babysit when necessary
-Drive the kids to school and pick them up after closing hours
-prepare simple meals for the kids and help them do their home work
-Arrange their drawers and tidy their rooms
-Do laundry and other household chores
-take care of our lovely and adorable dog.

Please always get back to me with every informations you received from the immigration services because i need to monitor it here with you so that you have your documents on time. I am sure that they will get you the Visa and workpermits in five working days because i am going to present my bank statement, taxe clerance and other relevants documents i need to back you up as your employer. Please remember that these documments are so immiportant to me so much and without these documents they will not allowerd me to get your work permits as your employer.
Go through your employment letter very well to see the tearms and regulations that you have to take care of the expenses your self and make sure that every payment you make to the immigration services you have the receipt kept because you will come along with it when coming to Uk i will pay back to you all the expenses you make after five working days of your resumption.
