Lessons held in the mornings start at 9.00am. Lessons held in the afternoon start at 2.00pm.

 

 The classes are small and are made up of about 7-8 students. In all cases the maximum number in a class is 12 students. The courses cover a program, which tackles the four main faculties: comprehension, communication, reading, and writing.

 

A special emphasis is placed on the spoken language. The teaching techniques, are geared to fill the gaps in the knowledge of English of the students, simulation Dublinof real-life situations, dialogues, play acting, discussions and debates supply excellent opportunities to acquire fluency in the language.

 

Courses for absolute beginners start the first Monday of July, August and September and at the beginning of January.

 

 

 

ELEMENTARY COURSE

DAY 1

Present tense of the verb TO BE, HAVE GOT. Articles-A, AN, THE. Prepositions of place -OPPOSITE, BEHIND. Personal nouns, national identities, professions, numbers and letters. Homework: exercises from the workbook. Outing to Old Dublin or video “Home Alone”.

DAY 2

Correction of homework. Simple Present tense: THERE IS/THERE ARE. Exercises from the workbook. Asking information, directions, personal details, the time, address. Let’s Listen (cassette). Homework: Visit to the National Gallery or video “Mad Max”.

DAY 3

Correction of homework. Present Continuous tense. Exercises from the workbook. Formal requests-CAN/COULD I. Attempt to construct a vocabulary. Clothes, food, colors, prices, sizes. Let’s Listen (cassette). Homework. Visit to the National Museum or video “Robin Hood”.

DAY 4

Correction of homework. Revision of the Simple Present and Continuous tense. Interrogation forms WHAT DO YOU DO. Short questions YES I DO. Subjects: animals, holidays, physical appearance, time. Excursion to Howth or video “Ghostbusters”.

DAY 5

Correction of homework. Revision of the week’s work. Comparatives. Telling a story with pictures. Dictation. Homework for the weekend: essay: ”The day of a famous person”. Walk in the city centre of Dublin or video “A Fish Called Wanda”.

 

 

LOWER INTERMEDIATE COURSE

 

DAY 1

Simple Present. Exercises from the workbook. Continuous Present. Social English. HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND. SAME TO YOU. Subjects of discussion: People. Video and class book: ”The Lost Secret”. Outing on foot to Old Dublin or video “Home Alone”.

DAY 2

Past Tense. WHAT DID YOU DO LAST NIGHT? Irregular Verbs. Expressions of time: Dates, at six o’clock, Sunday. Comprehension subjects: Life in a Japanese school. Visit to the National Gallery or video “Mad Max”.              

DAY 3

Past Continuous v Simple Past. Exercises from the workbook. Family of words. Discussion: HOW AMBITIOUS ARE YOU? Writing postcards. Visit to the National Museum or video “Robin Hood”.            

DAY 4

Formal requests: COULD YOU/WOULD YOU. To offer to do things: I’LL.........................

Network of vocabulary: Houses, rooms. Group work: write a radio commercial. Outing to Howth or a video “Batman”.

DAY 5

ADVANCED COURSE

Revision: time and form of verbs. Exercises from the workbook. Quiz: Control your attitude to the learning of a language. Subject of discussion: education. Activity: an essay on school life. Visit to the National Gallery or video: ”Dead Poet’s Society”.

DAY 2

Modal of auxiliary verbs. The present, future and past. Express probability, obligation. Construction of verbs: prefixes and suffixes. Subject of discussion: Childhood. Comprehension: ”How to live to 100”. Activity: An essay on the bringing up of children. Outing on foot to Old Dublin or video: ”Three Men and a Baby”.      

DAY 3

To add emphasis: What I like is/are..........The Perfect: Present/Past/Future Perfect. Exercises from the workbook. Subject of discussion: Famous Stories. Reading Subject:” Parson’s Pleasure” an abbreviated story by Roald Dahl. Activity: a modern fairy tale. Visit to the National Museum or video: ”J.F.K.”.            

DAY 4

Adverbs with two forms: most, mostly. Adverbs and expressions of opinions: anyway, apparently. Exercises from the workbook. Euphemisms. Subject of discussion: Social Classes. Comprehension: An interview with a romantic novelist. Reading:” The Upper Class”: Newspaper article. Outing to Howth or video: ”Pretty Woman”/”Educating Rita”.

DAY 5

Revision of the week’s work. Formal and informal language. Idiomatic expressions. Introduction to  “Pub Talk”. Social English. Subject of comprehension: A variety of accents. Future suggested reading. Outing to the Municipal Gallery or video: ”The Commitments”.

 

3-WEEK ENGLISH GROUP COURSE EXAMPLE

TRANSFERS

Students are transferred from the airport to the school where their host families will come and pick them up. On the return journey students will be transferred from the school to the airport.

CLASSES

Monday to Friday, 4 classes every morning from 9.00am to 1.00pm. Students sit a test on arrival and are placed in a class based on their level of English. The maximum number of students in every class is 12 students. A textbook and a workbook are included in the cost of the course. The emphasis is on the spoken language. Students are given homework and they can sit the Pitman examination on completion of their course. Students can also prepare for the TOEFL Cambridge examination and the Trinity College London examinations. A certificate is issued by the school at the end of the course, but the school reserves the right to refuse to issue the certificate to students who have failed to obtain satisfying results or who have not regularly attended classes.  

 

ENGLISH FOR PARTICULAR NEEDS

 

Commercial English in groups

 

The maximum number of students is 6 per group. The courses start the first Monday of the month (from September to June inclusive). The course consists of 20 lessons a week for a period of 2 weeks. To register for this course an intermediate level of English is needed. The course was designed to improve the use of the language in numerous areas including:

Linguistic ability in a commercial setting for meetings, negotiations, telephone conversations, presentations.

Language capabilities-improvement of pronunciation and the acquisition of new vocabulary.

Active comprehension-with particular emphasis on the ability to take notes.

Summary of information oral and written.

 

bullet

Social situations with clients/colleagues, receptions and discussions of current events.

Private lessons or small groups

 

It is possible to organize courses all year round of private lessons or lessons for small groups. These courses, aimed at satisfying specific needs of clients have been found to be very productive in the past. A large selection of teaching material is used.

 

Special Courses

 

Special courses are available: Introduction to Anglo-Irish Literature, Introduction to Irish History and Culture, Business English, English for Teachers, English for Tourism. A good knowledge of English is necessary for these courses. Classes are held twice a week (2.00pm-5.00pm). The minimum number of participants for every course is 5 and the maximum is 10. Books, articles and other materials are supplied.

 

EXAMINATIONS

 

At the school, students have the opportunity to prepare for all of the examinations that are officially recognized internationally. The school has an excellent record of candidates who have passed exams including Cambridge Preliminary, Cambridge First Certificate, CambridgeDublin Advanced Certificate and Cambridge Proficiency. These examinations are held twice a year in December and June apart from the Preliminary Certificate, which is held four times a year (November, April, May and June). One has to register for these examinations about twelve weeks before the examination.

At the school it is possible to sit the Pitman Institute Examination at the end of each month (except December and January). It is necessary to register for these examinations six weeks before the date of the examination.

The school also prepares students for TOEFL examinations (Test of English as a foreign language).

The Director of Studies and the teachers will advise students of the most suitable examination by setting tests and judging their work.
